At FB Howell Stephanie and I met twice with our pull-out ELL teachers. The results of the two meetings mirrored our survey results. Below it is the list of needs we came up with:
1. Students to be able to practice speaking English by recording their voices. 2. Students to be able to go onto laptops and hear audio books in English. 3. Students to be able to read books in native language: Spanish.
Solutions: 1. Audacity software will be installed on the smaller labs of netbooks. 2. Teachers can check out small mobile labs of netbooks and go to: BookFlix TumbleBooks DPS Online database: Early World of Learning 3. Due to Boost grant of $3,500 new Spanish chapter books were added to Library collection.
Due to fixed curriculums and lack of training time we were unable to train the teachers in the requested programs. We have committed to enlarging the number of laptops on the mini labs to make it more useable for the ELL classrooms.
Below is a project I worked on with one classroom of ELA-S 3rd class students.
The goal of this project was three-fold: 1. Students to learn about the life cycle of animals per the Science core curriculm. 2. Students to practice English fluency. 3. The teachers would collaborate to integrate 21st century tools into core curriculum.
